A gathering place for local residents and workers alike, this pub is friendly and welcoming, and also features a jukebox and pool table. The style is very much old school pub, with counteries available in the front public bar as well as meals from a more extensive menu in the dedicated dining area out the back. An ideal place to get a feel for this area of Melbourne.

We had one of the best pub meals of the year the other night at the Royal Mail, the steak was a sensational cut and perfectly cooked, the vegetables were just right, the sauce (on the side of course) was amazing and the micro-brewed beers were tasting great as well. My new favourite local and great in winter too.

After many incarnations since 1875 and having suffered the woes of the 20th century; wars, depressions and gentrification, this iconic working class watering hole is reinvented as a beacon of inner Melbourne hospitality.

Renovated in 2003 providing a dining room and bar with a hint of rich European elegance and a vibrant public bar with all the required accoutrements (pool table, conviviality and chook raffles) it has gradually built a steady clientele from the local business and young urban families.

Mien Host Peter has a long history in hospitality and pub broking and with his family provide exceptional conviviality. Peter has also recruited outstanding kitchen staff led by Melissa Mc Grath an excellent journeyperson who has a deep history in both pubs and fine dining and aspires to bring excellence in "home cooking" to the table and indeed she does.
