The Railway's interior is very art deco with a curvaceous bar and wooden floorboards throughout. There is a huge back room which serves delicious affordable food (The Momma Cass Memorial Kitchen) and a couple of pool tables. This area then leads out to a beer garden which is a very popular venue on a Sunday for the classic Sunday Sesh. On Friday nights the Railway is popular with office workers for an end of the week wind-down where sometimes they'll convert a room off the front bar into a dance floor playing a range of popular music - always the perfect setting for a great night.

Midweek nights are a bit more relaxed, with plenty of food specials on and so forth.

One of the best in Melbourne, the medium sized beer garden is lush and cosy, and tends to get nicely packed.

A top South Melbourne venue, grungy in feel and immensely popular on the weekends - easy to see why when there's a DJ belting out popular tunes. The 1am closing time here can be simply devastating.

The 'Rails' as it is affectionately known by regulars is a real gem. Old style bar with a fabulous beer garden. A little bit of Fitzroy on the southside, no minimalist reno here which seems to be what every other venue has gone for in recent years. The food is great and can be eaten in the beer garden, in one of two dining areas or casually at the bar. It's hard to go past the saganaki or Jamaican jerk chicken. A favourite for ten years. Get on board!

I've always loved this pub, it's got to be one of the best. Just wish I could live in South Melbourne so it would be my local. Great staff, great retro feel and I love the no pokies sign out the front. Excellent beer garden and not overly packed on the weekends. Doesn't seem to attract the normal crowd from St Kilda which is a blessing!

I live in St Kilda... I make the trip down to the Railway Hotel, South Melbourne when I want to escape the rubbish in St Kilda and vist a real pub, which serves resturant quality food, but without the the rip-off prices.

The beer garden has recently been renovated, and the result is a ripper. I read the recent reviews in The Age and the Herald Sun - both glowing reports - so I know it's not just me that thinks this is a great place.

I highly recommend The Railway - but you need to discover it for yourself, if you do.... I'm sure you'll be hooked!

This pub has the best beer garden in Melbourne, no question. Forget the Belgium or the Standard - you should check this one out. I think it must have been renovated last Winter, cause it is lookin' great.
