Venue type: Pub, Club
With pictures of has-been Middle Eastern leaders on the walls, a TV-come-fish tank behind the bar, and it's own beer (called 'Piss'), the GB has more than a few quirky touches. There are chairs and tables in the front bar, comfortable old couches out the back and some seating outside on the veranda. The Great Britain's cavernous basement also sports a bar, a dance area and comfy couch seating. This area is generally closed during the week and sometimes reserved for dancey DJ gigs and private functions.
The GB's popularity hasn't waned in years, and on weekends you might have to be content with milling around the bar unless you're early, because the couches are snapped up quickly!
Outdoor Area / Beer Garden
Over the summer the GB's beer garden offers the chance to have some drinks outside.
Live Music Venue
You can't fault it, there's live music here most nights.
Few are the pubs in Melbourne that haven't been overloaded with betting machines and posers, but the GB is one - great for a tasty Italian style pizza and pretty good Guinness.

The Great Britain has only come to my attention recently, but it has been a long time favourite of some new friends of mine. I went along on a Thursday night a few weeks ago to see what they were addicted to with my own eyes ... 'Extreme Karaoki'! Definitely a lot of fun and very popular. In 'the cave' downstairs, there is a relaxed feel, if pretty packed in, and a lot of friendly mingling going on while a steady stream of one night only pop stars do their thing. But wait, it's not only the one nighters, there are regulars who dress in costume and practice the words and dance steps to their songs as well, who make for a very entertaining night. The Great Britain may be an acquired taste, but is still worth a look.
