Partystar Review
The Evelyn Hotel is nothing less than a Fitzroy institution. Its biggest drawcard is the live bands and other acts that feature in the large bandroom night after night after night.
One of Fitzroy's busiest bottle shops is built-in, along with relaxed outdoor seating that features the odd busker.
A separate front bar has a big screen and a pool table to get the mind off things.
Location is everything, and the Evelyn's right in the middle of it.
Our tip: if you're broke, listen to the band from the front room.
Outdoor Area / Beer Garden
Outdoor tables here give a perfect view of Brunswick Street life.
Live Music Venue
The separate, dedicated band room hosts various acts most nights a week.

The Evelyn may be a hard to find if you have never been there as there are no obvious signs on the outside, and it does look a bit like a dirty old pub. But the inside is comfortably cool, with a relaxed atmosphere, and a very 'Brunswick Street' feel to it. There are two sections of The Evelyn; one with the band and one with tables and chairs and a pool table. The music in the non-band section is just at the right volume, and its a great place to catch up with a few mates and have a few drinks. I found the old school arcade game as table idea a novelty, especially as they are still playable. The staff are friendly and service is quick, even the bouncers go out of their way for you. An all-round good place.

The best thing about the Evelyn for me (and for many others, I'm guessing) is the live music. The Evelyn is always pumping with some terrific live bands, and you'll find yourself becoming a groupie of some of the unknown bands the Evelyn has play! The Evelyn is possibly most famous for being the home of The Brown Hornet (and recently MegaBias), both bands featuring Dylan Lewis who you might remember from ABC's Recovery and more recently Celebrity Big Brother and the Pepsi Charts. The Evelyn is usually pretty packed on weekends and attracts a large range of people and personalities which always keeps things interesting. The Evelyn building can be misleading though ... it's a big old thing on the corner and I'm sure it has turned many a person away. But don't be deceived! With reasonably priced drinks, and an extremely funky atmosphere, it's a great place to kick back and see a good live band.
