Partystar Review
Picture this: 1870s Sydney, and Balmain is rapidly becoming one of the city's top industrial centres. Along comes the Cricketer’s Arms, a blue collar hotel which welcomed the dockers and wharfies from the Mort Bay and White Bay industrial areas into her embrace. Cricketers is not ashamed to admit that she was known to host more than a few patrons of questionable integrity.
Renovations in 1996 saw Cricketers shed that image to become Monkey Bar, but the old girl flipped back to her roots in 2015 to return to the Cricketer’s Arms moniker.
Due to the changed demographic of Balmain, the hotel no longer serves beers to nefarious wharfies and gang members, but all are welcome here for a cool refreshing ale, a burger, some Italian fare and even a function if the event arises.
The Cricketer’s Arms Hotel now back to its original namesake is located at 255 Darling St on the famous Balmain Peninsula. The Condotel group took over the pub in 2015 and had the aim of returning it to its former glory as a pub representing Balmain’s working class history, but with a few twists.
Half of the venue is now utilized as a Italian restaurant named One Ford Street which is located downstairs with the street level remaining as a traditional pub. The Cricketer’s Arms Hotel boasts the famous Balmain Burger Co., over 10 screens devoted to sport, Balmain’s best TAB and VIP lounge and also 2 upstairs function rooms. The ‘Arms’ is a true public tap house boasting 17 taps devoted to beer, cider and wine (the most on the peninsular).
